What Is Eco-Friendly BPA Free Baby Dinnerware l Melikey

Plastic dinnerware contains toxic chemicals, and the use of plastic baby dinnerware poses a great risk to your baby's health.

We've done a lot of research on plastic-free tableware options - stainless steel, bamboo, silicone, and more. They all have their pros and cons, and ultimately, it's about finding the best one for your home. Durability is of course important - not only is the dinnerware able to survive the "throwing everything on the floor" phase, but for the planet (and your wallet) as well. While we can hope that all your plates will be passed on to another family when your kids grow up, there comes a time when they need to be disposed of. It's important to consider where they will be shipped when the day comes - can they be recycled or go to landfill?

Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of plastic-free dinnerware options. While they won't solve the problem of getting your kids to eat more vegetables, plastic-free, non-toxic utensils will help make mealtimes healthier.

Bamboo

Our Pick: Melikey Bamboo Bowl And Spoon Set

PROS | WHY WE LOVE IT: Bamboo is sustainable, eco-friendly, and doesn't break easily. Melikey has sustainable kids mealtime products, one of which is a bamboo bowl and plate with a silicone suction cup on the bottom, perfect for the "throw everything off the highchair tray" phase. It can grow with the child for many years. It's organic, non-toxic, and coated with an FDA-approved food-grade varnish. We recommend Melikey Bamboo Baby Cutlery (pictured) as they make 100% organic, food safe, phthalates and BPA free bamboo bowls and spoon set for babies.

Cons: Bamboo is not microwave or dishwasher safe. Also, Melikey Baby Bamboo Cutlery is great for early years, but not growing with your child. They can also get expensive if you have multiple toddlers or more than one group.

stainless steel

our pick: stainless steel spoon and fork set

pros | why we love it: We love their stylish design, durability, and they can be recycled at the end of their useful life. They don't risk breaking like glass and some other materials. Without the "kid" traits, they'll last for years -- until they're ready for adult utensils. They are made of grade 304 stainless steel (also known as 18/8 and 18/10) and are considered a safe choice for non-toxic dinnerware. Our stainless steel spoon and fork

Cons: Depending on the temperature of the food you serve in them, they may be hot or cold to the touch. However, there are double-wall options available that keep the outside of the dinnerware at room temperature. Stainless steel cannot go into microwave ovens. This is not an option for children who are allergic or sensitive to nickel or chromium. Our stainless steel forks and spoons also contain a part of silicone, the baby's hand grip part, which is very soft and easy for babies to hold.

Silicone

Our Pick: Melikey Silicone Baby Feeding Set

BENEFITS | WHY WE LOVE IT: This baby tableware is made from 100% food-grade silicone with no plastic fillers. It's free of BPA, BPS, PVC, and phthalates, is durable, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe. Additionally, Melikey's silicones are FDA-approved. Our dish mats and bowls sucked onto the table to prevent little ones from dropping them on the floor. We also make spoons that are perfect for babies. Our silicone feeding set include silicone baby bowl and plate, silicone baby cup, silicone baby bib, silicone spoon, silicone fork and gift box.

Cons: Most silicone tableware products are designed for babies and toddlers (ages 2 and under), so while they're great for this stage of life, they don't grow with kids and therefore have a short lifespan in your home . (Though they're great for passing.) They're also expensive if you plan to have more than one set on hand. While the FDA has approved food-grade silicone to be safe, there is still more testing to be done. Therefore, it is important to choose food grade and medical grade silicone.

melamine

Why we don't like it: People often hear the word "melamine" without realizing it's actually plastic. A major problem with melamine is its risk of leach harmful chemicals into food -- especially when heated or used in hot or acidic food. One study had participants eat soup from a melamine bowl. Melamine can be detected in urine 4-6 hours after eating. Studies have found that sustained low-level exposure can cause kidney stones in children and adults. Scientists don't fully understand the effects of long-term exposure to melamine, and more research is underway. The FDA considers it safe to use as long as it is used properly, but I can tell you that I am not willing to risk exposure to plastic and possible toxins.

End of Life: Trash (Just because it's plastic doesn't mean it's recyclable.)
